Studying high school in Finland: Alice’s graduation and success story.
In August 2022, Alice Vu, an 18-year-old student from Vietnam, began her journey of studying high school in Finland at Janakkala High School. Through the Finest Future program, Alice took a leap of faith—moving to a new country, learning in a new language, and adapting to a completely different education system. Now, Alice has proudly graduated, and her story is a beautiful example of perseverance, flexibility, and the opportunities Finland offers to international students.
Starting FRESH in Finland
Alice’s journey began when she restarted high school in Finland after finishing grade 10 in Vietnam. While the transition wasn’t easy, the Finnish education system helped her focus on subjects she loved.
“In Vietnam, the curriculum is fixed for everyone, covering 12 subjects. In Finland, students can register for courses based on their goals. This flexibility in learning really excited me!”
The calm, supportive environment in Finland was a perfect fit for Alice’s introverted personality.
“I don’t have any particularly special hobbies. Like most young people, I enjoy reading comics and playing relaxing games. I usually prefer quiet environments.”
Graduation day: A special Finnish tradition moment
For Alice, graduation in Finland was a unique and unforgettable experience. Unlike the lively ceremonies back home, the Finnish graduation was simple but meaningful.
“The graduation ceremony was simple but very solemn. It felt warm, informal, and focused on each individual.”
One of the standout moments was receiving the white Lakki cap, a Finnish tradition symbolizing the completion of high school.
“This is a special emblem that marks the completion of an important stage in life. It meant so much to me.”
After the ceremony, Alice was touched by the kindness of her teacher’s family, who invited her to celebrate.
“Even though I was far from my homeland, Vietnam, I still felt the love and kindness of the people in Finland. I deeply appreciate and will always remember this with gratitude.”
Hard work and big achievements
From Janakkala high schoolAlice’s accomplishments are remarkable. She completed her matriculation exams in five subjects—math, physics, German, English, and Finnish as a second language—and excelled. Her L grade (highest grade) in math earned her a €1,000 scholarship from Teknologiateollisuus ry. Alongside her high school studies, she also took engineering pathway courses at an open university, paving the way for her future. Alice’s dedication paid off: she earned a study place at Aalto University without the need for entrance exams. In January, she will start her dream program in Automation and Robotics.
“I want to be an engineer because I like problem-solving. Finland gave me the tools and opportunities to follow this dream.”
One of her most memorable moments was adjusting to the credit-based learning system, which allowed her to focus on subjects that interested her.
“The Finnish education system encourages students to study, research, and develop critical thinking. Teachers are not just instructors but also companions who are always ready to listen, help, and encourage students.”
Alice hopes to stay in Finland after her studies, continuing to build on the foundation she’s worked so hard for. Her story is a beautiful reminder of what’s possible when you take a leap into the unknown, work hard, and embrace the opportunities around you. Alice’s story highlights why studying high school in Finland is such a great opportunity for international students. Here’s her advice:
“To anyone starting this journey, I would say: Work on your language skills, stay focused on your goals, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Finland has so much to offer if you’re open to it.”
Alice’s graduation marks not just the completion of high school, but the beginning of a promising future. Her story is a testament to the strength of the Finnish education system, the opportunities Finland offers, and the determination of students who embrace them.
